Abstract
IBM announces the availability of OpenEdition Services feature for MVS/ESA SP 4.3 (JES2 and JES3). Included in this availability announcement is the information required to order the following.
- MVS/ESA SP 4.3 support feature for OpenEdition services.
- OpenEdition Shell and Utilities feature.
- OpenEdition Debugger feature.
OpenEdition services (with co-requisite products LE/370 Release 3 and AD/Cycle C/370 Release 2 Compiler) provide significant expansion of MVS/ESA's role in an open-systems environment by providing POSIX (1) interfaces as a base to enable interoperability of applications within a heterogeneous network, and increase portability of applications, data, and skills with other environments conforming to the same open systems standards. A new set of services is offered called OpenEdition services. OpenEdition services in conjunction with LE/370 Release 3 runtime library conforms to the following standards:
- ISO/IEC 9945-1:1990/IEEE (2) POSIX 1003.1-1990 (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Portable Operating System Interface).
- A subset of IEEE POSIX 1003.1a (Draft 6 July 1991) will be supported.
- ISO/IEC DIS 9945-2:1992/IEEE POSIX 1003.2-1992 (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Portable Operating System Interface).
- A subset of IEEE POSIX 1003.4a (Draft 6 February 1992) will be supported.
OpenEdition Services has been successfully tested with the PCTS :FIPS-151-2:compliance test suite and has requested registration with NIST for certification at the FIPS-151-2 level.
OpenEdition Services consists of:
- An OpenEdition Application Programming Interface (API) The OpenEdition API supports a set of assembler language interfaces; together with LE/370, the OpenEdition API supports a set of C function calls as specified in POSIX 1003.1 and a subset of POSIX 1003.1a.
- An OpenEdition Shell and Utilities IBM has licensed and modified the popular Mortice Kern Systems' InterOpen (3)/Shell and Utilities source code which conforms with POSIX 1003.2.
- A Hierarchical File System supporting the OpenEdition offering The OpenEdition file system, as specified in IEEE POSIX 1003.1, is a hierarchical file system familiar to UNIX (4) programmers. The file system will be supplied by DFSMS/MVS (TM).
- An Extended User Interface
The Extended user interface consists of a set of user
commands that run on TSO/E which enable the user to:
- Access the OpenEdition Shell and Utilities.
- Write and test a POSIX application.
- Execute an application on the MVS/ESA OpenEdition offering.
- An OpenEdition dbx debugger
The OpenEdition dbx debugger is an interactive tool for debugging C language applications that use OpenEdition Services. It is based on the popular 'dbx' debugger familiar to UNIX programmers. (1) POSIX trademark of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (2) IEEE trademark of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (3) InterOpen trademark of MKS Corporation. (4) UNIX registered trademark UNix System Laboratories, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Novell, Inc.
