Further proof that this city has no allegiance to a particular sound, this year's Boston Music Awards recognized the breadth of homegrown talent. The winners were announced late Wednesday at the Sinclair in Cambridge, during the first of two consecutive nights of celebration.

Speedy Ortiz, the indie-rock band that formed in western Massachusetts before spending time here, cleaned up in the top three categories, including artist, album/EP ("Foil Deer"), and song of the year ("Raising the Skate"). They also won for best charitable effort for donating net proceeds from their latest tour to the Girls Rock Camp Foundation.

Evan Dando, the stalwart rocker beloved since his days with the Lemonheads, was honored as a Hall of Fame inductee. Bolstered by an excellent debut, this year's "Dry Food," Palehound, the project of Allston resident Ellen Kempner, won the award for new artist of the year.

Ruby Rose Fox, the pop-soul dynamo who's on the rise and in the studio recording her first full-length album, won for pop artist and female vocalist of the year. In somewhat of a head-scratcher, pop sensations Lake Street Dive were nominated for jazz artist of the year – and won.

Tigerman WOAH, the hair-parting punk-Americana group, picked up the trophy for live artist of the year. And Michael Christmas, living up to the hype generated by his new album, "What a Weird Day," won for hip-hop artist.

Based on choices determined by a newly expanded nominating committee, winners were chosen through an online vote open to the public.

The BMAs continue Thursday night at the Sinclair – which, by the way, won for best live venue – with a headlining set from Dando. Tickets are $25 through www.ticketmaster.com.
