If you have a kid hooked on the Care Bears, prepare to see a lot more of the animated characters from American Greetings Corp. Film entertainment distributor Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) said it has extended its relationship with American Greetings Properties, the intellectual property and outbound licensing division of American Greetings (NYSE: AM), by acquiring the exclusive North American home entertainment distribution rights to numerous titles based on the Care Bears, including a new television series and a CGI-animated movie. Lionsgate also said it has acquired the home entertainment distribution rights to the CBS television series based on another American Greetings property, Sushi Pack, which follows four pieces of sushi and a wad of wasabi who are brought to life with special powers to help rid the world of evil. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Lionsgate has distributed the classic Care Bears television series and direct-to-DVD Care Bears features for the last five years. Through the new deal, Lionsgate obtains distribution rights to 48 episodes of the Care Bears television series, "Care Bears: Adventures In Care-A-Lot," along with a Care Bears CGI-animated movie scheduled for release in fall 2009. Josef Mandelbaum, president and CEO of American Greetings Intellectual Property Group, said in a statement, We are very excited to team up with Lionsgate and include new character brands and additional Care Bears entertainment. These new entertainment releases will undoubtedly be a hit with both kids and parents alike and we look forward to a continued collaborative relationship to support these character brands in the marketplace." Anne Parducci, Lionsgate executive vice president of marketing, said expanding the relationship with American Greetings Properties has been a major priority for us in the family entertainment area. The Care Bears have been an important and successful brand in our family entertainment portfolio for the last five years and we wanted to complement our existing product with new content, Ms. Parducci said.
