Eugene Levy won best actor in a comedy series at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.
Accepting the trophy for Schitt’s Creek, Levy said, “I guess it’s kind of ironical that the straightest role I’ve ever played lands me an Emmy for a comedy performance, so now I seriously have to question what I’ve been doing for the last 50 years.”
He went on to thank his wife, Deborah Divine, and the “amazing production team” and “exceptionally talented cast” of the sitcom. The actor said that he has had “such a joy” working on the show with his children, Daniel Levy — who won best supporting actor for the sitcom — and Sarah Levy.
“It was an honor to be in your company,” Levy said as he concluded his speech.
Levy beat out fellow nominees Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Don Cheadle (Black Monday), Ted Danson (The Good Place), Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method) and Ramy Youssef (Ramy).
Schitt’s Creek, which won two awards at the Creative Emmys earlier this week, broke the record for most Emmy nominations by a comedy series in its final season, with 15 total nods. Among the sitcom’s other 7 wins, it took the award for best comedy series, best actress for Catherine O’Hara and best directing.
Annie Murphy won best supporting actress, while the show was also recognized for best writing and casting. Prior to this year, Schitt’s Creek had never won an Emmy.
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Emmy Awards were broadcast on ABC and followed the week-long Creative Arts Emmys.
