Tina, the musical based on the life of pop superstar Tina Turner, will arrive on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, officially opening on Nov. 9. The production currently is playing to sellout houses on London’s West End at the Aldwych Theatre, where it debuted in April 2018.
In a statement, Turner — played onstage to wild critical acclaim by actress Adrienne Warren — expressed her excitement over the musical making its way to New York.
“Bringing this musical to life on stage and working with this team has meant so much to me, I feel that it is in many ways a culmination of my career. London audiences have been and continue to be extraordinary,” the 78-year-old singer said. “Now, the bright lights of Broadway are calling, and I’m very excited to share this beautiful show with New York audiences next year.”
Previews at the Lunt-Fontanne begin Oct. 12, with Warren set to reprise her starring role on Broadway. Additional casting is to be announced.
Directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!) and written by Katori Hall with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, Tina features choreography by Anthony van Laast, with set and costume designs by Mark Thompson. Nicholas Skilbeck serves as the musical supervisor.
Tina is produced on the West End by Stage Entertainment, Joop van den Ende and Tali Pelman, in association with Turner. Nederlander Presentations will serve as a general partner with Stage Entertainment and Pelman on Broadway.
“I am thrilled that we are finally able to announce that Tina will open on Broadway next fall,” Pelman, producer and group creative managing director at Stage Entertainment, said in a statement. “West End audiences have fallen in love with the show, and working with the incomparable Tina Turner has been an exceptional experience.”
“She has made it her mission to tell her story with raw honesty and grit,” added Pelman. “She is an inspiration for all of us. We cannot wait for Broadway audiences to experience the power of Tina.”
