What was the worst film from the worst year ever?
The 41st annual Razzie Awards will hope to answer that grim question after releasing its nominations that cover the annus horribilis that was 2020. Topping the ignoble list is Universal’s universal bomb Dolittle, which scored six nominations, including worst film, worst remake, worst actor for Robert Downey Jr., worst director for Stephen Gaghan, worst screenplay and worst screen combo for RDJ and his what-was-he-thinking Welsh accent.
Also notching six nominations was the Polish film 365 Days, a tawdry remake of the artistically questionable Fifty Shades of Grey. Barbara Bialowas and Tomasz Mandes’ erotic drama is a surprise contender as the Razzies tweaked their rules to account for the most extraordinary year (that is, a serious lack of terrible films getting a wide release).

Mired in controversy, 365 Days faced a campaign to have it removed from Netflix. Welsh singer Duffy, who had suffered a horrific experience of being drugged, kidnapped and raped, said in an open letter to the streamer that the film “glamorizes the brutal reality of sex trafficking, kidnapping and rape.”
Sony’s The Fantasy Island “reimaging” scored five nominations, the rare misfire for Blumhouse picking up citations for worst film, worst supporting actress twice (Maggie Q and Lucy Hale), worst screenplay and worst remake.
Sia’s directorial debut Music, which was described by The Hollywood Reporter’s reviewer as a “sentimental atrocity so cringe-inducing it should come with an advisory warning for anyone with preexisting shoulder or back injuries,” grabbed a surprisingly low four nominations: worst film, worst director, worst actor (Kate Hudson) and worst supporting actress (Maddie Ziegler).
Alongside perennial Razzie contenders Adam Sandler and David Spade, Mike “The My Pillow Guy” Lindell scored a worst actor nomination for Absolute Proof, the wingnut conspiratorial documentary he self-financed that claims the 2020 election was “stolen” from three-time Razzie winner Donald Trump. The film is also among the contenders for worst film.
