It's a fairly cute, but totally generic story. There's some alright lines (the video about Earth made me smirk) and references scattered throughout (two in a row for Aliens!) , but it's not often where the script rises above average. A fair chunk of the jokes are predictable and unoriginal slapstick humor. To make matters worse, a lot of them are complimented with incredibly lame sound effects.
For example, every time a specific character falls over there's a super cheesy slipping sound effect and a fart nose when he lands. Look, I love me some toilet humor, but nothing here's gonna deliver a big laugh.
You can tell the voice actors are giving it their all and they do deserve praise for that, but the script just doesn't make proper use of their efforts at all. That said, Escape from Planet Earth does manage to amuse with a few decent action scenes. They won't drop your jaw or blow you away, but seeing Scorch hold his own against some dudes in Hazmat suits was plenty of fun.
The best part is easily the visuals. Rainmaker Entertainment (does that name make anyone else want to re-watch Looper?) did a brilliant and thorough job with the animation. The exterior shots of Baab are stunning and the final action sequence has absurdly impressive lighting and detail. My ears and brain didn't enjoy the movie that much, but my eyes sure had one helluva good time.
Escape From Planet Earth looks fantastic and is sporting some commendable voice acting, but these qualities can't overcome a stale script and significant lack of laughs. Unless you have a young kid that wants to see it, I just can't recommend this one at all.
