Always at the opposite end of the awards season spectrum, the MTV Movie Awards steered clear of honouring the big Academy Awards winners and instead paid homage to the people’s most popular movies of 2013.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire walked away with the most awards at the ceremony in Los Angeles, including the coveted Movie Of The Year prize.

Hunger Games heroine Jennifer Lawrence won Best Female Performance for her role as Katniss Everdeen, while her co-star Josh Hutcherson scooped Best Male Performance.

Hutcherson dedicated his award to the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.

“I know that if Philip were here, he would really think this is really cool,” he told the crowd.

“To have him in our movies was one of the coolest things in the world. He's one of the actors I've looked up to my entire life. We think about him every day on set. Wherever he is, this definitely goes out to him as well.”

Elsewhere, Will Poulter, the winner of the BAFTA Rising Star Award 2014, took home two golden popcorn trophies – one for Breakthrough Performance and one for Best Kiss with Emma Roberts and Jennifer Aniston.

The Wolf Of Wall Street won two awards. Jonah Hill scored Best Comedic Performance while Leonardo DiCaprio won #WTF Moment, for the scene in which Jordan Belfort takes his Lamborghini for a spin.

Zac Efron was also one of the biggest talking points of the evening. He was stripped down to his bare chest by Rita Ora when he took to the stage to collect his award for Best Shirtless Performance in That Awkward Moment.

As was a fitting tribute paid to the late Paul Walker, who was named one half of the Best On-screen Duo with Vin Diesel for their roles in Fast & Furious 6.

Other winners included Brad Pitt, Jared Leto, Henry Cavill, Channing Tatum, Mark Wahlberg and the Backstreet Boys, Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen and Craig Robinson.
