Dr Michael Mortell stepped down as president of UCC yesterday after 10 years in office, He is succeeded by Professor Gerry Wrixon. In his final report to the university's governing body, Dr Mortell outlined UCC's expansion in the 1990s with 5,000 new student places, 800 jobs created, a £50 million rise in the annual budget, £70 million invested in capital projects and £75 million in income for research contracts over the past five years.
