Ghostbusters 3 is now being developed by a new writing team, says Dan Aykroyd.
However, the long-mooted sequel will only go ahead if the script is up to scratch. When asked about Ghostbusters 3 by WIVB, Aykroyd replied: “We’ve got a new writing staff working on it now. It’s got to be perfect. That’s the whole thing. There’s no point in doing it unless it’s perfect. So that’s what we’re up to now.”
Aykroyd and co-star Harold Ramis wrote the original 1984 Ghostbusters film and 1989’s Ghostbusters II. Both films also starred Bill Murray and were directed by Ivan Reitman. A third film has been stuck in development for over a decade.
Last August, Aykroyd revealed that the sequel had an “excellent script” written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who also worked together on Bad Teacher and several episodes of the US version of The Office.
Murray’s refusal to confirm his involvement has continually been a stumbling block for the sequel. However, Aykroyd suggested last year that the third film could go ahead without him. He said at the time: “Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr Murray. That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that Ghostbusters is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributed to it in a massive way.”
