Biography

  • Fito Páez (born March 13, 1963) is the stage name of Argentine rock and roll singer-songwriter Rodolfo Páez Ávalos, hailing from Rosario, Argentina.

Affectionately called “Rodolfito” during his childhood to distinguish him from his father Rodolfo, the singer formed his first band, Staff, at the age of 13. A year later Páez played alongside Rubén Goldín and Jorge Llonch in the group El Banquete, after which he began performing as a solo artist in local clubs and bars. Upon graduating from high school, Páez spent a brief time touring with bands, before releasing his debut studio album “Del ’63” in 1984. Initially only a local success, the record soon reached the city of Buneos Aires, earning widespread critical acclaim. Featuring contributions from the likes of Daniel Wirtz, Tweety González, and Fabián Gallardo, the record was supported by an extensive South American tour including a show at the Thousand Days of Democracy Festival.

The full-length “La La La” arrived in 1986, followed by Páez’s third full-length “Cludad de Pobres Corazones” which was released following the assassinations of his aunt and grandmother. As a result the record is much darker and angrier than it predecessor, though highlights the maturity and clarity in Páez’s songwriting.

The 1988 album saw Páez take not only the compositional reigns but also the production reigns for the first time, and showcased a number of musicians he had been working with including Osvaldo Fattoruso, Daniel Colobres, and Guillermo Vadalá. The singer-songwriter began the 1990s with a string of well-received albums starting with 1990’s “Tracer Mundo” and 1992’s “El Amor Después del Amor”. The latter album of which sold over 750,000 copies, was supported by sold-out shows all over the continent and represented Páez’s most successful album to date.

Led by the hit singles “Mariposa Tecknicolor” and “Tema de Piluso” Páez’s follow-up “Circo Beat” was released in 1994, with the companion album of remixes “Circo Beat Brazil” arriving soon after. The live album “Euforia” appeared in 1996, followed by the split album “Enemigos íntimos” with singer Joaquín Sabina” in 1998, and the cohesive studio album “Abre” in 1999. A year later the singer earned two awards at the first Latin Grammy Awards in 2000, however Páez was not content to let the new millennium to pass by without his involvement and increased his musical output.

A pair of albums “Rey Sol” and “Naturaleza sangre” were issued early in the new decade followed by a pair of live albums entitled “Mi vida con ella I” and “Mi vida con ella II”. The record “El mundo cabe en una canción” won Páez his third Grammy in 2007 for Best Rock Solo Vocal Album, after which he released his 2007 self-titled album, and 2010 album “Confiá”.

Live reviews

  • Fito Páez

The flamboyant Argentinian certainly knows how to deliver a performance, full of vibrant suits, strong vocals and proud piano pomposity. His show at the International Song Festival, ‪Viña del Mar‬, in 2014, provided just that. He was wearing a pink suit with a white shirt and black tie, making his presence on stage instantly eye catching. Somehow he pulled it off, it didn't look garish or gaudy, it just looked stylishly fun. Then when it came to the songs, he gave the audience an impassioned vocal performance and displayed his pianistic talents, that were certainly apparent in abundance as he played through his set. 'Al Lado Del Camino' was a romping piano-led ballad that soared through the venue with its powerful vocals. 'Yo Te Amo' featured synths and a full band of drums and guitars, with the track being full of electronic funk and melodies heavy on pop sensibilities. 'Polarid De Locura Ordinairia' was a highlight, with its grooving blues making for a very danceable track that certainly got the audience moving along to his swooning vocals. he set overall displayed his eclectic talent and the expansive vocabulary of his music, that travels across the pop spectrum to satisfy anyone in the audience. A top performer well worth a watch.
