Margaret Thatcher & Ronald Reagan |
Nicknamed the "Iron Lady," Margaret Thatcher won three successive General Elections and served as the Prime Minister of England from 1979 to 1990. One of her staunchest allies was U.S. President Ronald Reagan, a fellow conservative. The two shared similar right-wing, pro-corporate political philosophies. Thatcher sent British troops to the territory to retake the islands in what became known as the Falklands War and Argentina surrendered in June 1982. Voiced her support for Ronald Reagan's air raids on Libya in 1986 and allowed U.S. forces to use British bases to help carry out the attack.[2]
Not long after leaving office, Margaret was appointed to the House of Lords, as Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven, in 1992, and granted her own Coat of Arms by the College of Arms. She was also appointed Member of the Order of Merit, by the Queen, and later appointed Lady of the Order of the Garter, in 1995. During this period, Margaret wrote two volumes of Memoirs, The Downing Street Years in 1993 and The Path to Power in 1995.[2]
Margaret Thatcher suffered a series of small strokes in 2002, then suffered a great personal loss in 2003, when her husband of more than 50 years, Denis, died. The following year, Margaret had to say goodbye to an old friend and ally, Ronald Reagan.[2]
Right Honourable the Baroness Margaret Thatcher, LG, OM, DStJ, PC, FRS, HonFRSC died at the Ritz Hotel, in London, on the 8th of April 2013, and her ashes were buried in the Royal Hospital Chelsea Burial Ground, Chelsea, after a ceremonial funeral, including full military honours, with a church service held at St. Paul's Cathedral.[4][2]
