Netflix Unveils A 2021 Film Slate With Bigger Volume & Star Wattage; Scott Stuber On The Escalating Film Ambition

When he took on the challenge of building a film program for Netflix three and one-half years ago, over other more traditional studio head jobs, Netflix Head of Original Films Scott Stuber was tasked with elevating the volume of releases, but also to use his relationships with talent to bring them aboard at a time when they only worked on the small screen for HBO and Showtime.

That demarcation line is long gone, and in assessing the 2021 film slate that Netflix releases this morning, it looks like a mission accomplished for Stuber and his team. The volume and stars is Netflix’s answer to the recent Investor Day presentation by Disney that contained a dizzying content investment in theatrical and Disney+ product. We’ve covered most of these Netflix projects on Deadline in their formative stages, but seeing the slate in one gulp, and the star wattage in some of the films, is noteworthy.

The idea of releasing a new movie on its streaming site every week has gone from an ambition to an official slogan. Netflix’s slate this year consists of 70 films, including 52 English language live action films, 10 non-English language films, and eight animated features. This is way beyond what most traditional feature film studios generate, and most streamers. Netflix has reached a comparable output level of films for the past couple of years, but what’s most impressive is the A-listers who now come and play. These are one-off deals, but more are entering into longer term deals like Kevin Hart, who yesterday signed a nine figure overall deal that guarantees he will star in and produce four Netflix films in the future, with production to start soon on the Joe & Anthony Russo-directed espionage thriller The Gray Man with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans that is Netflix’s most financially ambitious film yet and is constructed to become a 007-type franchise.

The current slate features Leonardo DiCaprio – who makes his streaming debut starring in the Adam McKay-directed comedy Don’t Look Up alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Timothee Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Chris Evans, Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill – Denzel Washington, as well as Sandra Bullock – who follows Bird Box with an untitled drama directed by Nora Fingscheidt – Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds in Red Note, Zendaya and John David Washington in Malcolm & Marie, Jake Gyllenhaal and filmmakers including Sam Levinson, Antoine Fuqua, Joe Wright, Jane Campion, Shawn Levy, and directing debuts from Halle Berry and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

“We’re most excited about the accumulation of different things,” Stuber told Deadline. “We like our continuation in the YA space with All The Boys and Kissing Booth in a genre we’ve helped reignite, this Fear Street trilogy we’ve got with Chernin Entertainment, as we work out the cadence of how we release them. It’s something we’ve never been able to do before, where they are in close proximity and you can see a film trilogy in short order as opposed to the usual every two years. We had a big year in action last year, and we’re excited about Red Notice and the idea of making a big global PG-13 action movie with this group of talent should be a big moment for us. I’m excited about Zack Snyder coming back around on the zombie genre he and I worked on in our early days with Dawn of the Dead at Universal, and Army of the Dead is going to be fun. I’m excited about The Harder They Fall, a Western with Idris Elba and Regina King and Jay-Z producing and doing the music for us and reinventing that genre, and Don’t Look Up with McKay and Leo and Meryl and the all-star cast he put together. These are great films that will allow us to make a lot of noise this year. I’m thrilled to have Jane Campion’s next film, she’s someone I always looked up to and getting to work with her has been a true highlight for me and the team. And Lin-Manuel, to be the home of his directing debut, is a big moment for us as a company. It’s nice to come back in the new year and feel like you’ve got the opportunity to generate some excitement.”

Stuber recalls it being much more difficult to draw this kind of talent when he started and some questioned him taking on what was mostly a blank slate at Netflix. His talent relationships have helped, along with the willingness of Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos to place large bets on content investments, often outbidding rivals. That includes projects that started elsewhere but became too rich for traditional studios, as happened on Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, and led to the most expensive film on the 2021 slate, when the budget on Rawson Thurber Marshall-directed globetrotting heist film Red Notice with three major stars led that pic to move from Universal to Netflix. While it remains to be seen whether Stuber can find a way to Cannes and work around French chronology laws that keep films of streaming sites for three long years, Netflix has established itself as a sandbox for A-listers, who now are routinely aligning to films at its rival streamers. It has been a disruptive force in changing the shape of Hollywood filmmaking, something that was exacerbated by the pandemic shuttering movie theaters last year.

“Three years in, I’m excited by what we’ve done, but we’ve still got a lot more to do, but I feel good about the progress we’re making,” he said. “Back then, it was, how do we get great filmmakers and great talent to work here, and now we’ve got Leo, Meryl, Regina King. I’m excited we’ve got Halle Berry’s directorial debut. We’ll have some great international films from people like Paolo Sorrentino, Jean Pierre Jeunet. What I liked back in my Universal days is, you could make different things. You could make A Beautiful Mind, The Fast and the Furious, American Pie, and that is what I get to do here and the challenge now is to make them great, and reach the highest quality and that is what you get when you have some of the most talented people in the world. The fun part is working with a lot of people whom you have a lot of admiration for what they do.”

AWAKE
