UC San Diego Athletics
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Commitment

Tritons Rise Up | Black Lives Matter | Triton Voting Initiative

As one of UC San Diego’s largest and most visible units, UC San Diego Athletics has a special responsibility to help create an environment that contributes positively to the University’s principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

We uphold this expectation by committing ourselves to practices that ensure the dignity, safety, and well-being for all students, fans, staff, and scholar-athletes, celebrating each Triton’s unique identity as defined by their race, ethnicity, heritage, gender (identity, expression, and lived names), sex, sexual orientation, age, and/or religion among other elements.

We are committed to the comprehensive integration of equity and diversity in our athletics department culture and strategic decision-making as we aim to treat each member of the Triton Family in a fair and equitable manner. We are intentional in our efforts to combat harmful behavior through education and, if needed, higher consequence.

We are in alignment with the University’s Anti-Discrimination Policy and Principles of Community and continue to maintain an open line of communication between our partners at the Community Centers and the Office of the VC-EDI for guidance.

UC San Diego Athletics does not tolerate any discriminatory or derogatory language and/or behavior. This includes, among other things, race-based hate speech and symbols, both in written or verbal format, and gestures.

Gender Inclusion Policy:
UC San Diego Athletics recognizes all individuals on the gender spectrum. We respect all individual’s gender identity and expression, especially our nonbinary and transgender community. We use lived names and chosen pronouns. We actively work to ensure all members of the athletics community understand the concepts and terms referenced in the California Gender Recognition Act (SB-179).

In addition, UC San Diego Athletics welcomes all transgender scholar-athletes regardless of transitional stage to participate in our programs. To ensure transparency and competitive equity, we abide by the NCAA transgender inclusion policy which guides scholar-athletes seeking transition on how to do so without conflicting with their or their team’s eligibility. The following information is from the NCAA Transgender Handbook:

NCAA rules state that a male participating in competition on a female team makes the team a “mixed team”…[and it remains a mixed team] through the remainder of that academic year. [A mixed team] is ineligible for a women’s NCAA championship.

In order for the Athletics Department to remain in compliance with the above policy and to ensure eligibility for an NCAA championships, we will not permit the participation of a scholar-athlete that changes a team to “mixed” status and renders their team ineligible for NCAA women’s championships. However, should a transgender scholar-athlete seek to participate, we will work with them and support them in order to make participation possible without compromising team eligibility.
