Intaglio

It’s a chilly December night…the taxis roll in…some foreign faces, some Indian... a group of guys running around putting up banners. The campus lights are on and the Audi stands tall and majestic casting a lovely shadow on the shimmering lake. I stand transfixed, immersed in the beauty of this place when a friend’s voice brings me back to reality…there is work to be done. Yes, Intaglio is here!!!!!

Views on IIMC:

World class faculty, an extremely talented pool of friends, a scenic campus and constant growth and learning – this place never ceases to amaze. A unique feature of IIMC is the freedom it gives you in choosing your own balance between academics and extracurrics. And the best part of this journey has been the feeling of belongingness and the intense feeling of camaraderie, bonding and brotherhood between every IIMCian you meet. These have truly been the best “daze” of my life!!!!

Intaglio, IIM Calcutta’s annual international B-School fest, is our flagship event. The fest turns IIMC into one of the biggest melting pots of talent bringing students from around the globe, industry experts and the academia on a common platform where they share opinions, exchange ideas and discuss a variety of economic and world issues. Intaglio hosts a wide range of events covering the entire spectrum of management education. From exciting games to inspiring talks, from panel discussions to paper presentations, from analyses of heady management cases to rock shows and parties, Intaglio has it all.

The theme for this year’s Intaglio was “Motifs for Sustained Growth”, aimed at addressing the concern of both developing and developed countries on how to counteract the forces of stagnation after the high growth in the early 21st century. Vipul Tuli and Noshir Kaka, Partners at Mckinsey and Co. took the audience through the Indian scenario in the realms of BPO, IT and the Energy sector. Mr.Ravi Dhariwal, ED, Bennett and Coleman and Mr .N. Chandrasekaran ,EVP and Head, Global Operations, TCS , both used real life anecdotes in their talks on sustained growth.

Perhaps the highlight of this year’s Intaglio was the dramatic increase in the participation from foreign B-Schools. IIMC played host to teams from Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, University of Illinois, University of Tuck: Dartmouth, National University of Singapore and a few other Asian B-Schools. The whole campus bore a festive look as there was never a dull moment on campus. The Drams Cell of IIMC treated the audience to an awesome rendition of the play “An Odd Couple”. Laughter echoed in the auditorium for over two hours at a stretch, leaving the audience in high spirits and wanting for more. The intense competition during the events paved way to a spirit of camaraderie and friendship as the entire campus chilled out to the rocking tunes of the rock band Euphoria on one night and that of JBS-BaroC on the other.

Cicero’s Senate, the panel discussion was extra special this year as it brought out the perspective of the country’s leading businesswomen. Moderated by our own Prof. Anup Sinha, the charming panel of dignitaries included Ms. Jayshree Mohanka, Ms. Jessie Paul, Ms Kalpana Morparia, Ms Nina Nagpal, Ms. Shabnam Mullick and Ms. Farzana Haque. The panel member voiced their opinions on changing management frameworks and leadership challenges in the variable environment.

Another feather in the cap of Team Intaglio was the ISO 9001:2000 certification for the excellent quality of its events and processes. Intaglio thus becomes the first B-School fest in this part of the world to achieve this milestone. As a member of Team Intaglio, it felt great to be recognized for the hard work put in by the entire team – six months of fun, toil, bonding, arguments, learning, sacrifices, friendships and that little bit of something special, a little bit of Intaglio forever etched in all our hearts. The Intaglio experience makes you a better person and makes you realize that “Managers are not made in classrooms and PowerPoint presentations”, a belief central to the spirit of IIM Calcutta. The countdown to Intaglio 2006-07 begins….See you there!!
