Anne Hathaway Brother
Anne Hathaway and her brother Michael.

Anne Hathaway's family left the Catholic Church because of its intolerance of homosexuality. Anne grew up wanting to become a nun but shunned Catholicism when she learned her older brother, Michael, was gay.

"The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out," she told British GQ. "Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?"

But Episcopalianism didn't really take either.

"So I'm ... nothing," she said. "Fuck it, I'm forming. I'm a work in progress."

You can see Anne's striptease GQ photo shoot here.

She was fine with the Church's stance towards gays until she learned her brother was gay. Now that one of her loved ones is affected, she's all concerned.

The church's stance against gays is the same stance they take against all non-Catholics. They are all sinners and are therefore headed to hell.

I think the point is that Anne knew the church's stance all along, and only left after she found out her brother was gay. Some might refer to that as hypocrisy.

That's kind of silly.

Either you believe that what you believe is the word of God or you don't.

I don't understand religion shopping?

Good for Ms Hathaway! I have long disagreed with a lot of the catholic church's policies, starting with celibacy and ending with the obscene wealth that the pope is sitting on at a time when churches and schools are closing due to lack of money.

I disagree with the man-made laws such as fasting during lent, mandatory chuch attendance (IMHO, one doesnt have to go to a particular place to pray to God; you can do that anywhere the spirit strikes you.), birth control, oppression of women, etc You are threatened with hellfire and damnation if you dont follow these man-made rules religiously. (lol)

Celibacy is the reason for most of the pedophile priests. Celibacy was mandated in the Middle Ages because if a wealthy, married priest died, his money would go to his family but if he wasnt married, the money would go to the church. Greed, not being able to serve God better without the distraction of a family, was the reason for that man-made law.

They dont allow women to be priests because the church considers women to be inferior to men.

To me, there was just too much negativity and oppressive rules that I couldnt live with so I decided that I could no longer be a catholic.

Using the "F" word so easily in a sentence, it appears she wasn't seeking anything higher anyway. Why belong to a denomination just because?

Yeah, I'm Catholic and I use what is considered bad language a lot. Besides, the Bible only says that taking the Lord's name in vain is a curse word. I just don't use GD. Sometimes I say JC when I shouldn't, but hey, I never said I was perfect. Everybody is allowed to slip up (especially when the Ravens can't score against the Colts). I'm sure Anne isn't perfect either.

The Bible is so loaded with contradictions -- I believe Abelard compiled some 99 of them in Sic et Non -- that taking it with anything less than a grain of salt seems impossible except for those possessing multiple personality disorder. Most pick and choose. Unfortunately, some select the most empathy impaired and cruel passages as their guiding light (or darkness).

As for how nonsensical religion is, consider the following letter to the Irish Times quoted by another poster elsewhere:

"This is the the same “faith” that believes that a cosmic Jew who was his own father by a virgin can enable you to live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh, drink his blood and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from something invisible called your soul that is present because a woman made from a rib was convinced by a talking snake to eat an apple from a magical tree.

" -- letter to the Irish Times

Of course in the Catholic faith, the flesh and blood are literal. Don't believe me? Look up "transubstantiation."

Most people leave any structured organization when it attempts to direct one's life. If you don't want to hear it, don't go to church and don't pick up a bible. Same thing for TV, if you don't want to watch it, change the channel.

Not quite that easy ht.
Ask any gay couple who want to marry.
Tell your boss the reason you don't go to church is you're an atheist.
There is too much bigotry and discrimination because of religion to just 'change the channel'.

The Catholic Church is one of the great criminal enterprises of human history, an example of racketeering raised to high art, and I can't understand why anyone would be a member of it for any reason whatsoever. But Anne's walking away from it is better late than never, whatever the reason, I suppose.

It might not make you a hateful person, Fred.......but the point of view is nonsensical to me. If people are created by God....then why did God create homosexuals? I think I can hear the answer that will follow....well, people choose to be homosexual and thus choose to sin. This is where the nonsensical part of the argument kicks in for me by religious folks. I am assuming you are male, so the question that follows is do you choose to like women? Do you daily have to make a choice (sit there and think about it for a second)....do you have to look at men and women and actively decide I like the opposite sex? If you do, you are the only person I have ever come across who does. I'm female and I like men. I don't think about it.......I don't decide.....I don't choose. It just simply is. So, by the same logic it must be the same for homosexuals. They just do. They don't actively choose and they don't decide. So, I return to my original question.......if it is so sinful, why did God create homosexuals who have no say over their sexuality? It would just seem cruel that such a benevolent figure would want individuals to lie about who they are and who they love. It just doesn't seem right.

It's all so silly if you can think logically.

Human beings and every living thing on this planet are the end result of hundreds of millions of years of evolutionary processes. Male homosexuality is an evolutionary accommodation related to competition for females and resources. It occurs among animal groups with strong social and hierarchical structures by removing certain members of the family, clan or tribe from competing with the alpha male for females. Called "bare branches," these males show little or no inclination to mate, thus acting as a natural curb on population, but because they are males and not encumbered by the rearing of young, they can provide extra resources and protection for their family, clan or tribe. A somewhat different evolutionary dynamic is in play for females. So, God had nothing to do with it.

The majority are born that way. The same way we now see male fish acting like female fish, even carrying eggs. Can't explain it but that's the way it is.

Our environment is making it even worse. Look at a very feminine gay male. He acts as if he has more hormones than a true female!!! What makes them act that way? Like autism, some things can't be explained but its looking you square in the face.

so you are saying that the Catholic church should condone sexual relations between any two people who love each other? What if they are married to other people?
You are saying we have no control over our sexual desires?
of all the churches, the RC church promotes abstinence the most. Priests, nuns; all are expected to forgo sex. Sex is also not permitted between people who are not married to each other, and marriage is not permitted for people who have ex spouses still living.
so, if the RC church forbids sex for anybody who is single, widowed, or divorced, does that mean the church hates THEM too? Especially the divorced, for whom marriage is as taboo as same-sex marriage.
In fact, if you want to complain that the church won't allow same-sex couples to marry, why don't you complain to the formerly married? I'm sure you'll get lots of sympathy there.

They don't "hate" them.
They just believe they are damned.
But that belief is toxic to society.
Society should recognize and allow the marriage of any two people that want that designation and the benefits society bestows upon it.

It is more of a question that if you actually know a gay person who is a fine, kind and loving person, and your religion obligates you to hate that person as an abomination, any rational person would have to rethink belonging to any religion for said abomination.

Why the huge hang up by Christians about homosexuality? Christians are followers of Jesus, yes? There is nothing recorded on Jesus' views on the subject. But He had plenty to say about adulterers. Why not turn your hatred towards them?

One of the most common biblical texts used against homosexuality is from the book of Leviticus 18:22. One verse out of 27 chapters. A book of do's and dont's for his contemoraries, covering when to sow seed and not mixing seed in the same field 19:19 and not mixing of types of cloth, and all types of the evils of nakedness etc.

My favorite abomination regards eating shellfish or any other seafood that does not have fins or scales 11: 9-12. Surely, people who eat at Red Lobster and Crab shacks are condemned to hell.

See the link below that provides many of Leviticus' pronouncements and see if you also believe in them as strongly. Particularly 19: 5-8, which basically says, don't eat left overs. Or try 21:10 regarding stoning adulterers to death. If you believe that gays are abominations, then you have to believe that adulterers should be killed. Your God says so.

and because i say being gay is a sin does not make me a hateful person.

Ms Hathaway has a new movie coming out and she has to say something so the right liberals will notice and so saying something negative about religion, especially Catholics will get her just the publicity she needs and wants. If it takes using her brother's sexual orientation to do this then so be it. It is all fake outrage.

This issue isn't new. It has been public for quite some time. Just because a journalist asks her again about it, and she answers it again, doesn't make it calculated or opportunistic. Actors are required to do endless interviews for the opening of movies, so obviously there would be more press at that time.
