In rather sad news, Eminem‘s boxing movie, “Southpaw“, has been cancelled by the studio admist fears that they are currently working on far too many movies about boxing or fighting. A somewhat odd decision if it’s anti-violence, but just as likely it’s so the studio’s output doesn’t give them a one-note-joke reputation (although who really cares who the studio is, as an average cinemagoer?).

At the moment, we’d imagine he’s still attached to the film, as is director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Brooklyn’s Finest), so presumably the project will find another home at a studio who aren’t so worried about how many boxing or fighting movies they’re putting out.

The film follows an amateur boxer (played by Eminem himself) who hits the big time, before his fall, caused by a tragedy that is yet to be hinted at, let alone described. It’s somewhat vague at present, but whether you’re a boxer, an Eminem fan, a PartyPoker espanol fan who likes a little gamble on the big fights or a fan of sporting cinema, it’s bound to be worth a watch.

Eminem‘s last feature film, 8 Mile, was a hit with fans and filmgoers, although its autobiographical nature may have been a part of what encouraged people to see it, so it’s unclear how Southpaw will be received by both the press and the public.

Hopefully another studio will pick it up, as it’s been proven that he can not only act, but can draw in the required attention to send a film right up the charts when it hits the box office. Southpaw hasn’t sunk yet, and it may just appear in cinemas within the next year or two given the right studio muscle behind it.
