Tyler Perry wears many hats in the film world. He is a screenwriter, actor, producer, author and playwright. He is most known for creating a character called Mabel “Madea” Simmons; a tough, overactive elderly lady that Tyler himself, plays in drag. Perry was also the highest paid man in entertainment according to Forbes earning $130 million dollars in May of 2010 and 2011.
Born September 13, 1969 in New Orleans Louisiana, Tyler was born Emmitt Perry Jr into a family of three siblings and his parents. Unfortunately, due to the abusiveness of his father, young Emmit suffered from depression and was often suicidal as a teenager despite the weekly church attendances that his mother would take him to. At age 16, in order to separate himself from his father, he changed his name from Emmit to Tyler. It wasn’t until 1991 when he was working at an office job that he saw an episode on the The Oprah Winfrey Show” about the therapeutic nature of writing. This inspired him to write and he began to write letters to himself; which later became the basis of a play called ‘I Know I’ve Changed’. The play was unsuccessful and Tyler found himself on hard times taking up odd jobs and living out of his car. By 1998, he became more business savvy and was given a chance to stage his play for a second time. The play was a success and I drew attention from investors.
Since then, he gone on to become a successful writer, director and producer for stage, television and film.
