Christopher Nolan has gotten underway on his latest directing effort, the ambitious Interstellar. I’m not big on start of production announcements–we’ve written much about the movie while it was being assembled–but it’s Nolan and here is how the cast stacked up and how he’ll shoot it:
Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom, Inc., and Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that principal photography on “INTERSTELLAR” is officially underway in Alberta, Canada. The film will be released in IMAX® and 35mm theaters on November 7, 2014. Paramount Pictures will distribute domestically, Warner Bros. Pictures internationally.
Directed and co-written by Christopher Nolan (“Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy), the production will travel the globe and utilize a mixture of 35mm anamorphic and IMAX film photography to bring to the screen a script based on the combination of an original idea by Nolan and an existing script by Jonathan Nolan, originally developed for Paramount Pictures and producer Lynda Obst. The new script chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.
“INTERSTELLAR” features a prestigious cast that includes Matthew McConaughey (“Magic Mike,” “Mud”), Academy Award® winner Anne Hathaway (“Les Miserables,” “The Dark Knight Rises”), Academy Award® nominee Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty,” “The Tree of Life”), Bill Irwin (“Rachel Getting Married,” TV’s “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”) Academy Award® nominee John Lithgow (“Terms of Endearment,” “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”) Academy Award® nominee Casey Affleck (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Gone Baby Gone”), David Gyasi (“Cloud Atlas”), Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”), Mackenzie Foy (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Parts 1 and 2”) Timothée Chalamet (TV’s “Homeland”), Topher Grace (“Spider-Man 3”), David Oyelowo (“Jack Reacher,” “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), Academy Award® winner Ellen Burstyn (“The Last Picture Show,” “The Exorcist”), and Academy Award® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy).
The film is being produced by Academy Award® nominee Emma Thomas (“Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy) and Lynda Obst (“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “The Siege”). Renowned theoretical physicist Kip Thorne is consulting on the film as well as serving as executive producer, along with Jake Myers (“Jack Reacher,” “RED,” “RED 2”) and Jordan Goldberg (“Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy).
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” “The Fighter”), Academy Award®-nominated production designer Nathan Crowley (“The Dark Knight” Trilogy), Academy Award®-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres (“Gangster Squad,” “True Grit”) Academy Award®-nominated editor Lee Smith (“The Dark Knight” Trilogy,” “Elysium,”), Academy Award®-winning composer Hans Zimmer (“The Lion King,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy), and Academy Award®-winning visual effects supervisor Paul Franklin (“Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy).
a press person’s dream. all the Oscar nominees. what a wank.
Ugh, I know! I can’t stand talented actors who want to work with talented directors. Makes me sick.
Can’t. Wait. Is the outer space a new in-thing what with Cuaron’s Gravity and Nolan’s Interstellar?
Women can win an Oscar, it seems, and still not be mentioned before a man in the casting pr release.
Matthew McConaughey is the star of the movie. It’s a well known fact, why would he not be mentioned first?
Seriously. Who cares if they won an Oscar?
It’ll be a hundred million dollar version of Stargate…and we will watch it…
Nolan Brothers working on Stargate franchise ? That would be terrific !
$100m? Which half are you talking about?
Is it wrong that the names that impress me the most are John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn and Michael Caine?
No, it’s definitely not wrong. Topher Grace? Huh?
This will be Nolan’s 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Doesn’t this mark the first time Nolan has worked with a DP other than Wally Pfister? I do hope that they still care for one another and it is only a scheduling thing what with Mr P directing his his first feature.
The first time since “Following”. I think the ONLY reason Wally isn’t DPing is bc he is busy working on directing his first feature.
I just found out that guy is 52. I didn’t think he had even cracked 40. Where does one find the Wally Pfister diet?
Interested to see what Nolan does without Wally Pfister for the first time.
No silly capes or characters who can’t die because they are part of a studio brand?
I’m in!
Let’s get back to making movies and not Redbox rentals.
Hoyte Van Hoytema is amazing. Obviously he has big shoes to fill, but it’ll be done right.
Is this press release insinuating that there will NOT be a Digital Release???
I wonder if Nolan’s team was able to negotiate McConaughey out of his “One shirtless scene minimum” Clause?
You know, since we’ve never seen Christian Bales shirtless.
Yup…WP is busy directing his first movie for which Nolan is producing. So they still hold good.
Another almost entirely white Nolan cast. This guy has the least diverse ensembles of any major filmmaker working today. He is such a boring filmmaker. On every level.
wahhhhhHHHHhhhHh
Maybe Tyler Perry will do a stereotypical ethnic version that u will enjoy full of his “entirely black Perry cast.”
Saying that the cast is boring because it is white is just racist. Nolan at least understands enough to not put in a token black man. I would think that people in the 21st century could get over it already. If you go to a movie only because it features a perfectly divided ethnicity within the cast, then maybe you shouldn’t be going to see them in the first place. And by the way, if that list of actors/actresses bores you, then I feel very sorry for you.
Along with Star Trek, Prometheus, Oblivion, Star Trek Into Darkness, After Earth and Elysium (not to mention Star Wars returning in a couple years) I think it’s safe to say scifi is “cool” again. Give it a few years and it’ll burn out though.
the secret is that it is connected to the Engineers from Prometheus
Looking forward to Nolan’s take on this. With Burstyn and Chastain and Lithgow involved, it’ll definitely be something to watch.
@Jonathan. Am I the only one that doesn’t get the profound love for Jessica Chastain ? She has talent for sure , but the media keeps hyping that she is the next coming of Meryl Streep . Trust me , that is a major fallacy . She gave the least interesting performance in Zero Dark Thirty ( and she was miscast ) . I was more drawn to Jason Clarke , Jennifer Ehle , and Mark Strong . Plus , recently , Jessica made her boring Broadway stage debut of The Heiress , with mediocre reviews .
Now , Anne Hathaway killed in The Dark Knight Rises . Hopefully , she will bring her A-game and her strong physical prowess to Interstellar . Casey Affleck was phenomenal in that Jesse James film and Gone Baby Gone . I am sure he is going to knock it out of the park .
With Paul Franklin supervising, the visual effects are guaranteed to be stunning
