SOMEONE has just asked Philip Seymour Hoffman to take a risk and reveal something about his private life. Dressed in a checked, short- sleeved shirt, with a navy baseball cap wedged over his gingery mop, he cracks a smile, and mutters, "You guys", with a weariness that suggests publicising a film at Cannes is something he generally endures rather than enjoys.
The reason he's holding court in front of a table of journalists is because of his new film, Punch-Drunk Love, one of three he has coming out in the early part of 2003. Of course, Hoffman knows all about reporters - he's just played a particularly sleazy journalist in the recent remake of Red Dragon, and as ever, his presence single- handedly rescued the film from the mire. …
