Boosted by a doubling of its membership in 15 years, First Unitarian Society of Madison has become the largest Unitarian Universalist congregation in the country.
Its adult membership of 1,300 surpasses all other churches in the denomination, according to 2003-04 figures from the Unitarian Universalist Association in Boston.
This is the first time in the society's 124-year history that it has been the largest, leaders of the Madison congregation say. It had been third-largest for several years, then moved up to second in 2001 behind the Unitarian Church of All Souls in New York City.
Its rise to the top was aided by a recent purging of the membership rolls at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Okla. …
