Bois Blanc means “White Woods,” a name derived from the many birch and beech trees in the area. In large part because many Detroiters could not pronounce Bois Blanc Island as the French could (they often mumbled the name – “Boys Blank”), the Canadian government officially changed the Island’s name to “BobLo” in 1949. Known regionally as the former home of the BobLoIsland Amusement Park until its closure in 1993 after 95 years of operation, BobLo Island has recently been developed into a 240 acre private residential community.
