During December’s investor Day event, Disney revealed it would be launching a brand new general entertainment streaming service, “Star+” in Latin America in June.

The service will be the exclusive streaming home for general entertainment TV series and movies from The Walt Disney Company’s content studios, including Disney Television Studios, FX, 20th Century Studios, 20th Television, Touchstone, and more, and the home for streaming live sports from ESPN, the most respected and recognized brand for sports fans in the region. From dramas, to comedies, and thrillers for adults, Star+ will also feature exclusive original programming from the Star general entertainment brand, along with a collection of local originals.

In February, Disney has also rebranded its FOX TV channels to Star and registered Star + with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

However, earlier this month, Starz Entertainment (StarzPlay) has filed a dispute for the registered trademark in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.  Stating that because StarzPlay and Star+ are in the same category, it will lead to people being confused.  They’ve also opposed the trademarks for the Star Channel, Life, Hits, Fun, Action, Comedy and Classics and Premium channels.

Disney hasn’t announced any details regarding the launch of Star+ for a while, and the trademark dispute could result in Disney not being able to use the Star brand in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, which would cause major problems for the launch of Star+ in Latin America.

Star has already launched in over 17 countries, including Canada, Australia, Singapore and across Europe, as the general entertainment brand of Disney+.

Do you think StarzPlay and Star+ are too close a name?
