Butter yellow is officially the colour of the season, here's how celebs are styling the hue

When it comes to fashion trends, there is always a colour labelled the "hue of the moment". Last year it was all about Barbiecore with tones of pink in an ensemble earning instant style points. And while red seemed to be an early favourite, this spring summer it's all about butter yellow.

Fittingly so, with the sunny disposition mirroring (finally!) sunny skies. Because to nail this season's colour trend, we're talking about a very specific shade of yellow. Sitting somewhere between beige and citrusy lemon, it is just as its namesake suggests. Neutral but still a colour, pale but still bright, muted but still slightly brave, and most crucially, hella wearable.

On the SS24 runways, while Christopher Esber and Paloma Wool opted for head-to-toe colour drenching, Molly Goddard paired frothy tulle drop-waist skirts with cropped cardigans in contrasting shades of yellow and black crop tops. Sandy Liang, too, broke up the hue, relying on an exclusively neutral colour palette and styling butter yellow with rich chocolate brown. And Bottega Veneta and Proenza Schouler leaned into the seasonal feel with summer dresses in the pretty pastel.

But the real inspiration for wearing butter yellow comes from our favourite celebs. Sydney Sweeney forecasted the hue last September, with Aubrey Plaza's Loewe pin dress at the 2024 Emmy Awards – also worn by FKA Twigs on the cover of British Vogue – giving the colourway its red carpet debut. Emily Ratajkowski, Rihanna and Sabrina Carpenter have all followed suit, but don't just take our word for it.

Keep scrolling to see how celebrities are wearing the butter yellow trend, on and off the red carpet.

Hailey Bieber

Hailey Bieber has yet to put a foot wrong with her maternity style, continuing her fashion streak in this butter yellow two-piece. Snapping a mirror selfie at Rhode HQ, she accessorised her strapless double-layer top and tailored trousers co-ord with ballet flats and a brown handbag for the perfect workwear outfit. Her signature B pendant necklace and oval sunnies completed the look.

Sophie Turner

Sophie Turner stuns in her debut cover for British Vogue, going braless under a plunging Louis Vuitton top, held together with a buckled waist belt. The sunny hue perfectly complements her golden tresses that are styled down and poker straight, laying over the neckline of the design. Styled with white bottoms, the look oozes a springtime feel.

Sabrina Carpenter

Think of a butter yellow dress and the first that comes to mind for many romcom fans will be Kate Hudson's gown in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Fitting, then, that this was the inspo for Sabrina Carpenter's 25th birthday party dress – a vintage Cachet design tailored to a mini length and sourced via Depop.

EmRata looks chic AF pairing a zip-up butter yellow leather jacket with a black long-sleeve crop top and brown high-waist tailored trousers. The addition of black accessories proves just how wearable the hue is, becoming a neutral itself when paired with other neutral tones.

FKA Twigs

And the design looks just as good on FKA Twigs, perched atop a black taxi – her first British Vogue cover as well as the debut of Chioma Nnadi as head of the publication.

It may have sparked a thousand memes, but we low-key love Aubrey Plaza's butter yellow Loewe pin dress. The shiny satin fabric makes the colour look ever more like melting butter, if that's even possible.

Think butter yellow only works for Spring? Jennifer Lawrence made the hue work in winter when she stepped out last November wearing a high neck sweater with white jeans and a camel coat.
