    Helena Bonham Carter
    The Wings of the Dove

    Julie Christie
    Afterglow

    Judi Dench
    Mrs. Brown

    Helen Hunt*
    As Good as it Gets

    Titanic
    Kate Winslet

Helen was the only American in this all-Caucasian lineup. Her “aging” makeup for what is was made her look like she hadn’t slept in days. Nobody was going to beat her that year.
But overall I like this lineup. Aside from Titanic, these films were underseen. This was Kate’s 1st Lead nom. Deserving.

    Thoughts?

Wow, I know all these actresses but with the exception of Kate I never saw any of these movies 😂 it looks like a weak year for Best Actress because Kate wasn’t winning on her first lead nomination

They’re all very good films. My fave was Mrs Brown but I’m heavily biased. And for me Julie is a goddess.
It’s unfair that 1st time Lead nominees don’t win, although that seems to be changing.
    Kate was sublime.

Great year for Actress. Seen them all, all good and worthy.

    BUT…

it’s worth noting that the performances overlooked that year are equally deserving of nods (and even wins) –

    ESPECIALLY!

    Jennifer Lopez, “Selena”
    Pam Grier, “Jackie Brown”

    But also,

    Maggie Cheung, “Irma Vep”
    Jodie Foster, “Contact”
    Joey Lauren Adams, “Chasing Amy”
Julia Roberts, “My Best Friend’s Wedding”
Parker Posey, “The House of Yes”

You could make as compelling a list of nominees using only the performances shut out altogether in the Lead Actress race that year.

I would have voted for Bonham Carter in “The Wings of the Dove.” She was masterful in a very tricky and complex role that required much vulnerability. The film itself was underrated and should have received more nominations, particularly for Allison Elliott, who had received a surprising SAG nomination.

Dench is spectacular in “Mrs Brown,” she would have been my close runner-up. Christie was also luminous in a mostly forgettable movie. Winslet and Hunt would not have made my list of nominees, but they were more than capable in crowd-pleasing roles in blockbusters. They both elevated the limited material.

I would have nominated Kathy Burke in “Nil by Mouth,” Pam Grier in “Jackie Brown,” or Julia Roberts in “My Best Friends Wedding.”

Jackie Brown is egregiously under rated. My personal choice for supporting actor was Robert Forster.
Nobody could replace Pam in JB. My feeling is, that the butt clenching academy wasn’t ready for it.

One of the all time Best Actress line ups. All very strong performances.

Bonham Carter and Winslet were my favs. Either would have been increidlbe winners.

Hunt is kinda of an underrated win. Not my fav in this lineup but it was a very good performance and I love AGAIG.

Dench gave a great performance too and she was seen as a possible spoiler. This performance (and lose) secured her win next year.

I loved the dog in AGAIG. She actually had a stunt double dog.
    That entire cast is superb.
