Markakis stars as Carolina League defeats California League 8-0

FREDERICK, MD - Nick Markakis' early evening victory in the Terrapin Systems Home Run Derby foreshadowed an impressive evening by the Frederick Keys' slugger. Markakis went three-for-five with two home runs and three RBI's to lead the Carolina League to an 8-0 victory over the California League All-Stars.

The game provided several firsts as the Carolina League pitching staff held the California League scoreless for the first time in the nine-year match up between leagues, giving the Carolina League a 4-3-2 series edge. The 7,734 fans that stayed at Harry Grove Stadium through the early evening rain, helped set a Carolina/California League and Carolina League All-Star attendance record.

Markakis got the Carolina League on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run home run over the right field wall off Chris Cordeiro, giving the Carolina League a two-run edge.

In the third inning Winston-Salem's Thomas Collaro doubled down the right field line to score Frederick's Mario Delgado. Delgado singled to drive in Lynchburg's Bobby Kingsbury in the fourth giving the Carolina League a 4-0 lead.

Markakis hit a solo-homer in the fifth inning before Kingsbury and Kinston's Chris De La Cruz hit back-to-back RBI singles giving the Carolina League a commanding 7-0 lead. The Carolina League scored their final run in the seventh inning when the Potomac Nationals' Kory Casto hit a solo home run over to left center field wall.

Daniel Haigwood of Winston Salem earned the victory tossing a perfect second inning, striking out two batters, as Armando Galarraga of Potomac, Brady Endl of Myrtle Beach, Chris Britton of Frederick, Nick Pesco of Kinston, Chris Hernandez of Lynchburg, Ehren Wasserman of Winston-Salem and Aaron Williams of Salem followed, each tossing an inning of scoreless relief.

Cordeiro of Bakersfield took the loss allowing two runs on four hits. Ubaldo Jimenez of Modesto, Jason Mackintosh of Inland Empire, Garrett Mock of Lancaster and Joe Bateman of San Jose each pitched scoreless relief for the California League.

After the game CloseCall America presented Nick Markakis with the All-Star MVP Trophy provided by MTM Recognition Concepts, before Markakis and Ubaldo Jimenez were awarded the Carolina and California MVP Award from Major Baseball Advanced Media.

TERRAPIN SYSTEMS HOME RUN DERBY: Earlier in the evening Nick Markakis won back-to-back tie breakers and then defeated High Desert's Billy Butler to earn the Terrapin Systems Home Run Derby title. Markakis, who had the least home runs of any of the participants hit five home runs in the final round to walk away with the title.

After a six game road trip through Myrtle Beach and Lynchburg the Keys return to Harry Grove Stadium on Wednesday July 6 to begin a three game series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Tickets for those games are available by calling 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
