The artwork of students at Flanagan High School will be exhibited starting Tuesday in the lobby of City Hall, 10100 Pines Blvd.

Central water board schedules meeting

A meeting of the Central Broward Water Control District’s board of commissioners has been planned for Wednesday.

The session, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., will be in the district’s office, 8020 Stirling Road. The public is invited.

Elderly woman drowns while swimming in pool

An 82-year-old woman drowned in a residential swimming pool in the 100 block of Golden Isles Drive, police said.

Two other people were socializing near the pool when the accident occurred between 3 and 3:30 p.m. on June 10, police said.

The victim, who was found face down in the pool, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Commission OKs ban on sparklers at beach

Leave those sparklers at home this year if you plan to celebrate the Fourth of July at Hollywood beach.

City commissioners gave preliminary approval on Wednesday to a new rule that would ban sparklers from the beach. Sparklers would be banned all year round, but the commission wanted the prohibition in place in time for the holiday weekend.

Other fireworks already are banned at the beach.

Fire Chief Herminio Lorenzo recommended adding sparklers to the list of banned fireworks, noting that they account for 36 percent of all firework injuries.

Police have tried to discourage the use of sparklers for years.

The commission voted 4-0 in favor of the ban. The measure is expected to get final approval during at the July 1 meeting.

Violinist, pianist, cellist team up for concert

The Galiano Trio will give a concert today at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, 1650 Harrison St.

The trio, composed of violinist Mei Mei Luo, pianist Marlene Cooper and cellist Robert Moore, performs at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for center members; $8 for guests; and free for children under 12.

Pediatric emergencies lecture set at hospital

A free lecture on “Head Trauma/Shaken Baby Syndrome” will be presented on June 30 at noon in the main auditorium of Memorial Regional Hospital, 3501 Johnson St.

The talk, is sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, which is based at Memorial.
