There are few young women with Kate Beckinsale's talent and passion for self-transformation - capable of switching from the bookish girl-next-door to mischievous matchmaker, from Old Hollywood glamour to hard-edged Gothic with ironic nonchalance
Her most recent triumphs include the U.S. release of Everybody's Fine, a remake of Giuseppe Tornatore's Stanno Tutti Bene and her nomination by Esquire magazine as the Sexiest Woman Alive.
After suffering anorexia as a teenager, she is now all romantic
allure with soft curves, long, carefully rumpled brown hair and a
fresh, radiant face: a benefit from having left grey, damp
London for sunny Los Angeles.
Her California style includes natural make-up which flatters her
elegant, vaguely androgynous features and enhances her deep,
intense eyes. And all this takes onòy four minutes.
In fact, her handbag contains only a lip gloss, a concealer and her ever-present cigarettes.
Her choice of perfumes reveals more sophisticated tastes:
patchouli oil, Orange Blossom by Jo
Malone and the timeless Fracas by Robert
Piguet.
What don't you like about your body?
"My bottom. And my hands are too big. But they're good hands, too,
because I can get a safe grip on things so I look credible in
action films". (IMDb)
How do you keep in shape?
"I run, do yoga and weight training almost every day. I don't like
it but I know I have to. I should train more because I can feel it
doing me good. I don't like this obsession about being thin. The
female body is naturally rounded and it's a shame to ignore it".
(Paola Jacobbi, Vanity Fair, 2004)
What do you think about cosmetic surgery?
"I'm against it. If I were 45 I might think about having my
eyelids done. Although the result is unnatural. My eyes are fine as
they are: their slightly almond shape is a legacy of my Burmese
great-grandfather". (Sunday Express,
2006)
