Attendance
THINGS TO KNOW: Please contact the attendance office when your child will not be attending school. If you know ahead of time of doctors appointments, or other events that will keep your child out of school, Please let us know to make sure attendance is taken cared of. Please send your child with notes when you are: Running Late Out of School Current state of CPS: District-wide, our attendance rate has remained steadily around 92 to 93 percent over the past few years. (Currently Bogan is 91% for the month of September) Chronic absence rates overall have improved slightly over the past few years, but they have been increasing in elementary grades, and are overall higher but decreasing in high school grades. Chronic truancy rates overall have increased slightly in the past couple years, driven by increases in all elementary grades, and offset by decreasing high school truancy rates. Rationale for Making Attendance a Top Priority: Attendance is a “pre-requisite” to engage in instruction. We know that when students aren’t in class, they miss out on valuable learning time. The research demonstrates that from preschool through high school, absenteeism has serious implications for academic outcomes. Students who are chronically absent have lower test scores, lower likelihood of being on- track to graduate high school, and lower course grades which limits college acceptance and hinders completion. As a result, CPS has made it a priority to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to support schools in increasing attendance and decreasing chronic absence and chronic truancy rates.
